The Both clearances are valid for six months after issuance.

What is the Difference Between Police Clearance and NBI Clearance?

The police clearance and NBI clearance are documents verifying a person’s criminal history in the Philippines. However, their scopes differ:

NBI Clearance (National Bureau of Investigation Clearance)

  • The clearance provides a nationwide check of criminal cases filed against a person. This gives it a more comprehensive coverage of the Philippines. A NBI clearance is typically required for immigration applications, major job applications, and certification applications.
  • The NBI Clearance is valid for 6 to12 months.

Police Clearance

  • The police clearance, on the other hand, only checks criminal records within the police station’s jurisdiction. You may need separate clearances if you live or work in multiple cities or provinces. A police clearance may be sufficient for local purposes, such as getting a barangay clearance or applying for a local permit, though sometimes the NBI clearance is also required.
  • The validity of a police clearance is typically 6 months.

Local Police Clearance vs. National Police Clearance

There is a difference in scope between the two types of police clearances. Local police clearances are for a specific city or municipality while national police clearances are for the entire country.

Scope of Coverage

  • LPC: Your criminal and negative records are covered only if they are within the jurisdiction of the police station issuing it.
  • NPC: You can check your criminal and derogatory records based on the nationwide database of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Uses

  • LPC: Typically used to apply for a barangay clearance, open a local bank account, or find employment within the same town.
  • NPC: It is usually required for more formal purposes, such as job applications outside your area, government-issued ID applications (e.g., passports), NBI clearance requests, firearm registrations, or bank transactions across the country.

Validity

  • Both LPC and NPC: They are valid for six months after issuance.

In short

  • LPCs can be used for local purposes where a wider check isn’t required.
  • If you need a nationwide background check for official purposes, you can apply for an NPC.
  • If you’re from Police Clearance Cebu and plan to work in Manila, you don’t need to get a local police clearance Manila. The national police clearance can be applied for instead.

How to Apply for Local Police Clearance

The process of obtaining a Local Police Clearance (LPC) normally involves visiting your local police station and submitting the required documents.

Here’s what you can do:

Visit your local police station: Find the station that has jurisdiction over where you live.

Inquire about requirements: You will need to ask what documents will be needed to submit an application for an LPC. Generally, these include:

  • Station application form (usually provided by the station)
  • Valid ID (CNIC, Passport)
  • Proof of residency (utility bill, barangay certification)
  • Fingerprint capture fee

Submit your application and documents: To process your request, follow the station’s procedures.

Obtain your LPC: The processing time may vary based on the station’s workload. After the verification process is complete, you will be informed of the collection process for your LPC.

Philippine National Police Clearance fees are typically $150 for regular processing.
Depending on the method of payment, there may be additional fees.
